Talking about the uniforms of professional sports teams can be a divisive topic. Which make viewers tune into the game just to see the uniforms? Which stick out like a sore thumb? As a proud owner of nearly 20 jerseys from the NBA, NFL, and MLB, this is one of my favorite topics to talk about. Today, I’ll tackle the greatest uniforms by color. To qualify for this honor, the uniform must be currently used by a team and the full set will be scored. Teams qualify for only one category, which is their primary color. Presenting the best uniforms in the world of sports!
Navy Blue
The Best: Dallas Cowboys
Breaking Down the Set: Contrary to popular opinion, the best Cowboys Jersey, in my opinion, is the Navy alternate. The white numbering contrasts and the iconic stars on the sleeves put this jersey above others. The white away set uses a different shade of blue and the pants have a strange greenish color, but the Thanksgiving day jersey with the white middle and blue sleeves makes up for it. The Seahawks, Yankees, and Grizzlies also use blue well.
In Consideration: Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Orleans Pelicans, Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres
Dodger Blue
The Best: Kansas City Royals
Breaking Down the Set: Yes, the Royals are almost identical to the Dodgers and it could be said that KC took the Dodgers’ look. But the color scheme of the Royals fits perfectly- a regal gold with the blending Dodger Blue and Baby Blue. Buried under years of mediocrity, 29 to be exact, the uniforms were on display in the last two Octobers. The World Series jersey, revealed this year after the franchise’s recent World Series victory, accentuates the gold and is now the crown jewel. The Dodgers, who combine red with the hue of blue, are a close second with the Cubs, Warriors and Giants behind.
In Consideration: Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia 76ers, Buffalo Bills, New York Knicks, Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays
Light Blue
The Best: San Diego Chargers
Breaking Down the Set: The Chargers’ electric blue alternate is, beyond a doubt, the best jersey in sports history. The powder blue and electric yellow blend perfectly and the lightning bolts on the sleeves add to the look. The look was inspired by the early days of the Chargers, when Lance Alsworth and Don Coryell dominated defenses in the 60s. Hopefully, San Diego will swap the current navy jersey, a mediocre set, with the alternate. Carolina combines a darker electric blue with black and their all black outfit is second to the Chargers in the whole NFL. Orlando rocks the light blue with pinstripes in their current set.
In Consideration: Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, San Diego Chargers, Tennessee Titans
Red
The Best: Boston Red Sox
Breaking Down the Set: The Red Sox have a strong all-around set, and the recent move to add more red is further improvement. With so many red teams in the sports world, how does Boston stand out? For one, the Red Sox have a historic look that doesn’t feel dated, thanks to gradual and subtle updates. Also, each uniform is nearly equal, meaning Boston is the better looking team in all 162 games. The Bulls, Nationals, Heat, and D-Backs are runners-up.
In Consideration: Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins, Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Washington Wizards, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels, Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, Washington Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies, Portland Trail Blazers
Green
The Best: Boston Celtics
Breaking Down the Set: Classic. Sharp. Unique. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe the Celtics look, which has lasted for the duration of the storied franchise. The uniforms have been featured on 17 league NBA championship teams, from the days of Bill Russell to Larry Bird to Paul Pierce. The kelly green and white create a clean contrast on the home and away sets, but the best of the best is relatively new- the same green color with black numbering, similar to the Bulls. Together, the Celtics are the best dressed team in the sporting world. The green-yellow combination is a classic look with the runners up, the Packers and A’s.
In Consideration: Green Bay Packers, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, Utah Jazz, Oakland Athletics
Black/White
The Best: Oakland Raiders
Breaking Down the Set: Every uniform in the black white category is guaranteed to be clean and sharp, but the edge goes to the Raiders, who have used the silver and black to cultivate a bad boy image in the NFL. Currently, there are only two uniforms, a black and white, so a silver alt would be a cool edition. The White Sox and Spurs are very, very close behind but only in the 90s did they embrace white and black as their main colors. The stripes of the Bengals are one of the best, and most unique, designs
In Consideration: Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, Brooklyn Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago White Sox
Orange
The Best: Baltimore Orioles
Breaking Down the Set: Orange doesn’t always bode well on sports jerseys- in fact, they rarely work. Since the mid 20th century, the Orioles have been an exception. Orange and black looks sharp and all four jerseys stand out.
In Consideration: Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Phoenix Suns
Purple
The Best: Sacramento Kings
Breaking Down the Set: The Kings’ set is relatively new- as in, it came out yesterday. When the Kings become good again, which may not be for a while, their purple and silver combination will be regarded as one of the sharpest uniforms around. The checkerboard throwback to the 90s should be returned soon, and the new sublimated black alternate could be revolutionary. Baltimore has an interesting black-gold-purple combo, and Phoenix meshes an orange and purple for a very interesting scheme.
In Consideration: Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, Sacramento Kings, Colorado Rockies, Phoenix Suns
Yellow/Gold
Breaking Down the Set: Like purple, this is a small category. I’ll go with the Pirates, who made a fantastic change in dropping red and going with a throwback look. The numbering matches perfectly with the pirate theme and the clean, classic look connects the Roberto Clemente era to the Andrew McCutcheon days. The Lakers also have a classic look, while the Saints, the only team to feature gold, have a unique scheme that works well.
The Best: Pittsburgh Pirates
In Consideration: New Orleans Saints, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Pittsburgh Pirates
Teal
The Best: Charlotte Hornets
Breaking Down the Set: In the 1990s, the Hornets came out with a revolutionary purple-teal combination that set off a chain reaction through the sports world. But when the team moved to New Orleans and the expansion team became the Charlotte Bobcats, the uniforms were totally lost. Until now. Michael Jordan and Co. turned in the atrocious Bobcats identity for a return to the Hornets, and with the change came updated versions of the famed 90s unis. The purple and teal jerseys are back and better than ever, while a new black set with teal outlines is a gem. The other two teams primarily teal are the Dolphins and Jaguars, with the Diamondbacks of the MLB using the color in several of its uniform options.
In Consideration: Miami Dolphins, Charlotte Hornets, Jacksonville Jaguars

Historically considered to be a franchise that has given fans great uniforms to rock, the Suns’ current jersey continues down that line of smart design.
