On October 19, millions of viewers tuned in to ESPN’s broadcast of Monday Night Football. Most of the viewers wanted to see football. But many others turned the game on for another reason- the premiere of a new trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. On the same night, the official movie poster was released and tickets for movie showings were available online, even though the movie doesn’t come to cinemas until the night of December 17. The website Fandango, which sells movie tickets, crashed with all of the traffic from frantic superfans. “I’m hyped for the new movie,” senior Benji Bock said. “I’ve been waiting since first grade.”
All three unveilings put the craziness, intensity, and size of the Star Wars fanbase on display. Before moving forward to The Force Awakens, it is time to look back at the seven best scenes of the Star Wars saga.
“Imperial Boarding Party” (Episode IV: A New Hope)- The first scene of Star Wars cut straight to the chase. It is the first time that viewers are introduced to the Star Wars universe and the chilling Darth Vader.
“Meeting Old Ben” (Episode IV: A New Hope)- In one of the first scenes of Star Wars, Luke Skywalker’s meeting with Ben Kenobi introduced the quest, the Jedi, and the Force. Who can forget the music as Luke learns about the ways of the Force?
“Battle of the Heroes” (Episode III: Revenge of the Sith)- In the prequel trilogy, the climax was the lightsaber duel between Anakin Skywalker and his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, on the lava planet of Mustafar. The fight lasted eight minutes and showed how Darth Vader became Darth Vader.
“Death Star Destroyed” (Episode VI: Return of the Jedi)- The finale of the original trilogy featured a clashing of lightsabers and the definitive end of the Empire. “It was an amazing end to an amazing saga,” freshman Jaiden Shah said.
“Jedi Training” (Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back)- This scene introduced the wise Jedi master Yoda and his training of Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi and fight the Empire. “Yoda is my favorite,” sophomore Conner White said. “He is a unique character.”
“Trench Run” (Episode IV: A New Hope)- There would be no Star Wars without space battles and the first battle set the bar. After escaping the Death Star, Luke Skywalker’s mission is to shoot a miniscule target before time runs out. Oh, and he has stormtroopers and Darth Vader hot on his tail.
“Lightsaber Duel” (Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back)- “I am your father!” That iconic quote, Darth Vader’s revelation to Luke Skywalker, is immortalized in cinematic lore. The line comes after a climatic lightsaber duel and Luke’s reaction is priceless.
The Force Awakens is the first film of the third Star Wars trilogy, with the next two installments coming in 2017 and 2019. Here’s to hoping that the new trilogy brings even more memorable scenes.
