Nothing quite captures basketball fans’ imagination like USA basketball each Olympic cycle.  From the first year that pro players were permitted to wear the red, white and blue to recent superstar pairings that have put the NBA’s super team era to shame, the sight of the NBA’s very best joining forces on the Olympic stage … Continue reading Opinion: Team USA’s Olympic dominance is becoming a side note to basketball’s international growth in Paris

Opinion: The value of a well-fitting baseball cup, and other insights I learned from working at a sporting goods store

I can safely say that on my college graduation day, I did not expect for one of my future career opportunities to draw on my expertise on baseball cup sizes. But sometimes life requires stepping up to the challenge and expanding one’s boundaries, and this spring and summer I answered the call (figuratively and literally). … Continue reading Opinion: The value of a well-fitting baseball cup, and other insights I learned from working at a sporting goods store

In the bowels of Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium on a Sunday afternoon a couple Octobers ago, I caught a glimpse of a Ravens legend and one of the most electrifying players I have ever watched.  The game itself — a Ravens-Browns matchup celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Super Bowl XLVII team — was soaked … Continue reading Opinion: Remembering Jacoby Jones, an all-time Ravens playmaker and the receiver of the Mile High Miracle

Opinion: Orlando’s unusually active offseason positions young Magic core for continued contention

KCP is a two-time NBA champion who is an asset at Orlando’s areas of weakness, shooting and experience, so his signing could both stabilize the Magic’s lineup and accelerate its contention timeline. Combine the Caldwell-Pope signing with the extensions of two of Orlando’s most important figures, forward Franz Wagner and head coach Jamahl Mosley, and a couple of promising draft selections, and the Magic have good reason to believe they can continue its ascent to the top of the Eastern Conference.

I’ve asked plenty of questions in my time as a journalist, but none like this one: have any current NASCAR drivers been inspired by Lightning McQueen? One of the fascinating developments in the sports world over the past 12 months has been changing of the guard for some of sports’ most iconic franchises and programs.  Nick Saban’s retirement at Alabama football coming off a College Football Playoff appearance was a shock, while Pete Carroll’s dismissal with the Seattle Seahawks and Bill … Continue reading Opinion: Dan Hurley’s flirtation with the NBA made sense, but passing on the Lakers’ head coaching position was a brilliant move

Opinion: Authentic sports video games are thrilling, but arcade-type features are the key ingredient

This college football offseason, the hype isn’t focused on Heisman favorites, head coaching changes at three of the four College Football Playoff participants, the seismic changes of conference realignment or another on-the-field storyline. For what I have to imagine is the first time ever, the buzz is all about a video game: EA Sports’ College … Continue reading Opinion: Authentic sports video games are thrilling, but arcade-type features are the key ingredient

The Boston Celtics will take the floor at TD Garden on Thursday with an NBA-record 18th NBA Finals championship in their sights, a resounding 64 regular season wins (seven more than the next closest team) and a dominant 12-2 record in this year’s postseason bracket. In the 2012 offseason, Nike kicked off its brand-new NFL partnership with one of the most explosive, out-of-the-box and creative NFL uniform redesigns of all-time. While most teams saw a simple transition to Nike’s template after years in the Reebok mesh jerseys, the Seattle Seahawks unveiled an entirely new look with different patterns, colors and … Continue reading Opinion: 12 years in, has Nike’s NFL uniform partnership improved the league’s aesthetic?
